This point of interest is Mountainous and Urban. It is accessible all year round. It is accessible through public transport. It has a fee or ticket. MON-SAT: 09:00-16:00.

Mount Helmos, which means snowy mountain, is a mountain range in the northern Peloponnese located for the most part in the prefecture of Achaia and less in the prefecture of Corinthia, north of the province of Kalavryta at an altitude of 2,355 m. (the Highest Peak). The ancient name of the mountain was Aroania Ori from the Aroani river which originates in Planiteros, a wonderful area on the mountainside.

Journey to ancient myths

Myths, legends and history impress the visitor and challenge historical researchers. From Neraidorachi to the Waters of Stygos, from Planeteros to the Ski Center of Kalavryta, from Elatophytos to Souvardo, there are hundreds of points that arouse the admiration of the visitor. Most of us have heard of the mythical Waters of Styx, the waters of the terrible river that flowed into the underworld. A peculiar mythology has been built around the impressive landscape of Styx. Styx was the daughter of Oceanus and Tethys and participated in the Titanomachy taking the side of Zeus. In the waters of Stygos, the Nereida Thetis bathed Achilles' son to remain immortal, leaving him with only one vulnerable spot, the heel where he was holding him.

The Oath of the Gods

The Olympian Gods swore in the Waters of Styx and their oath to it was sacred and inviolable. The regent ceased to participate in the councils of the gods and to enjoy nectar and ambrosia. In it the Sun swore to satisfy every request of the son of Phaethon, so that he could not deny him his chariot, which the inexperienced youth drove clumsily, causing his death.

 The terrible river of Hades

The ancients believed that at the point where the Styx waters fall were the gates of Hades because at this point there is an opening that leads to a cave. Pausanias described the waters of the Styx as deadly to humans and animals. The only deity who could fearlessly approach Styx and convey Zeus' messages was Iris, his winged messenger. The color of its waters seems to be black, as they lick the rock before falling from above. For this color it is said that once the goddess Demeter, to escape from Poseidon who was chasing her, transformed into a mare. But when she was reflected in the waters of the Styx, through which she was passing, and saw how ugly she was, she cursed them to turn black.
