Historical data

In the beginning the Monastery was built where the Taxiarchon Monastery is today at the root of Erymanthos. The difficult weather conditions forced the monks to go down and they built the Monastery in the Agios Antonios position opposite its current position. But the new position did not contribute to the smooth operation of the Monastery.

The current Monastery should have been built between the years 1715 – 1728 by the hieromonk Nektarios, to whom traditions attribute great abilities, even miraculous ones.

Shortly after its foundation (1748), the Monastery was recognized as stauropygion. Over time, it acquired spiritual ties with the Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sina. In 1755 she was granted the Metochi of Agios Georgios. The few monks from Sina who monasticized in Metohi left in 1777. After the intervention of the Sinaitic monks, according to a tradition, the Monastery was protected by the local Turkish authorities, by decree of the Sultan.

Of course, there are various traditions regarding the protection of the Monastery by the Sultan.
