About ten kilometers northwest of Messolonghi you will find Aetoliko. Coming to Aetoliko, the visitor has the opportunity to tour its picturesque cobbled streets, to admire old mansions, to taste the gastronomic treasures of the area, which consist mainly of fresh fish and to visit the Engraving Museum of Vasso Katraki.

There you will also see the oldest church of the island, the Assumption of the Virgin, which is located in the center of the city and where the first national assemblies of the representatives of Roumeli took place, as well as the trial of G. Karaiskakis took place on April 1, 1824. In the church are kept Holy Relics, such as the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary – painted by the Evangelist Luke, the Epitaph (work of the 15th century AD) and the wood-carved Temple of the Virgin.

You will also see the Church of Taxiarches, located in the center of Aetoliko. Taxiarches are the patron saints of the island since 1610 and celebrate on the 8th of November. In the courtyard of the church of Taxiarches is the tomb of Kyra-Vasiliki, wife of Ali Pasha of Ioannina.
