The Holy Monastery of Askiti is located between two rocks in the green gorge of Goumeros, which is located at the western foot of Mount Foloi. The cavernous monastery is dedicated to the deposition of the Holy Belt of the Virgin and has been declared a Monument of natural beauty. It was built by the inhabitants of the area, who found an icon of the Virgin Mary at the spot, while its current name is due to an ascetic, who is said to have lived in the gorge of Goumeros in the past. Inside the cave there is the sanctuary, a kind of corridor and a well, while the ruins of the Byzantine Monastery, which dates back to around 1200 AD, are located in a pit with a total area of ​​300 square meters and a height of 50 meters. The monastery for several years was a monastic center and hosted more than 50 monks, while in recent years it has been abandoned and is celebrated only every year on August 31.
