EPHORATE OF ANTIQUITIES OF ACHAIA
Patras during the Greek Revolution of 1821 was one of the most important and prosperous cities of the Peloponnese, mainly due to its geographical location in travels to the west and its proximity to the Ionian Islands - which was never below the Ottoman occupation, resulting in the development of trade and the great interest of the High Gate for the city, both for economic and strategic reasons. Due to the economic prosperity of the city, several merchants from Patras were appointed consuls of the largest European cities. At the same time, many of them, such as brothers Petmeza and Zaimi, Asimakis Fotilas, etc., had joined the Friendly Society and were preparing the ground for the revolution by collecting money, ammunition and equipment for the upcoming struggle. Makrygiannis had also arrived in Patras in order to bring all the leaders in contact and to coordinate the revolutionary effort. These special aspects of the history of the city of Patras at a given time, which are components of the Local History of Achaia, will try to approach the educational activity of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Achaia entitled: Discovering Patras of the Revolutionary years. The aim of the action is the understanding of the concept of local history by students of all levels, as it contributes to the formation of historical consciousness. The study of local history enables students to acquire a more complete personal, social and national identity, while at the same time being able to realize the contribution of the people around him in the creation of history. The creation of the educational package with the rich supervisory material and the parallel experiential actions, which will be done in direct collaboration with the teachers, we believe that will enable the students not only to know the history of their place through the contact with various historical sources, but also to awaken their research mood and to be introduced to the historical method.
