Petimezai Tower

The Tower of Petimezaion is a typical example of a fortified post-Byzantine house and is located in a prominent position in the settlement of Kato Lousoi. It was rebuilt in the 17th century and was the residence and starting point of the struggles of the Petimeza family. It is preserved in very good condition and, in addition, has been designated a historic monument.

This point of interest is Mountainous and Rural. It is accessible all year round. It is not accessible through public transport. It has no fee or ticket.

The tower was the base of the family of Petimezaioi or Petmezaioi, which according to tradition, came from Epirus, from where they were forced to leave due to the Turkish persecutions and settle in Kato Lousoi Kalavryta.

During the Peloponnese rebellion (1770) against the Turks and until 1800, more than twenty Petimezaian thieves and sinners gave their lives in conflicts with the Turkalbans.

Athanasios Petmezas (1760-1804) together with Kolokotronis and Zacharias created the legendary triad of charioteers (1785). After the murder of Zacharias, a sultanic decree was issued declaring the other two, as G. Terzetis writes in the "Memoirs" dictated to him by Kolokotronis (".....or you two Petmezas and me or the heads of the Kotsabashis"). In 1804 Athanasios Petmezas, rewarded by the Turks, fell victim to betrayal and was murdered inside his Tower.

During the revolution, in which the Petmezaians took the lead, their national action intensified and peaked. An important role was played by: Anagnostis (killed on the same day and time as his son Sotirakis in the Corinthian Basilica in a battle against Dramalis - his death has been immortalized by the German painter Von Hess and the painting is in the palaces of Munich), Vasilios (friendly, general during the liberation struggle), Nikolaos (friendly, general, actively moved against Ibrahim in 1826 who tried to invade the monastery of the Great Cave and prevented him with his few lads and the monks of the monastery), Golfinos, Kostantis etc. who fought for the liberation of Greece.

Descendants of the Petmezaians who have distinguished themselves as generals, politicians, scientists, scholars and have developed intense social activity, we meet to this day.
