Village

Zoumbata

Zoumbata is a mountainous settlement of the village of Moira, at 950 meters altitude, on Mount Panachaiko. From 1830 the Arvanite cattle breeders of the mountainous Zoumbata began to descend to the lowland villages of Achagia, establishing settlements there, such as Gerbesi, Merteza, Krali, Harbilaika and others, where they spent the winter. The name is interpreted by the great historian of Patras K. Triantafyllou from the zoumbatas who is the bodyguard. From the mountainous Zoumbata, one of the semi-autonomous roads passed to the monastery of Makellaria and Kalavritochoria.

Residents of the village accompanied the bodyguards of the travelers to the Achaean hinterland, since the route was very dangerous due to the dense forests and the robbers. During the years of the Palaeologans (1380-1400) they inhabited Zoumbata and the surrounding villages of Mazaraki, Vetaika and Albanian-speaking Christian populations, while during the Turkish occupation many Zoumbatians were distinguished as thieves.

The metropolitan of Derkon, Gregory (Historical figure), who was born around 1750 in Zoumbata, became a leading Zoumbatiotis. The Turks, admiring both his great abilities and his intelligence, called him Morali - Seitan: Peloponnesian Satan. He lived as a monk in the monastery of Agios Athanasios (located in Filia, Kalavrita) and in the monastery of Taxiarches in Aigio.

Just 27 years old, in 1777 he became metropolitan of Lacedaemon, developing great activity. The same thing happened when he was serving in the metropolis of Vidyni in Bulgaria. From 1801-1821 he was metropolitan of Derkon, a small town of Constantinople, while he was one of the first to be initiated into the Friendly Society.

Finally, on June 3, 1821, the brilliant hierarch Gregory Derkon was hanged after first blessing the noose of his gallows together with the metropolitans of Thessaloniki, Joseph of Tyrnovo, Ioannikios, Dorotheos of Adrianople. In his birthplace, a bust of Gregory has already been built by the Cultural Association of Patras "Death" and the Holy Diocese of Patras.

In July 2021, the Church of Greece, following a decision of the Holy Synod, decided on the canonization of the famous national martyr Gregory, Metropolitan of Derkon.
