Monastery

Holy Monastery of Makellaria

The holy monastery of Makellaria, is located opposite the village of Lapanagoi and is built on a characteristic cliff, which is why some people righteously call it the "Meteora of the Peloponnese". According to an inscription in the monastery, it was built in 532 by Velissarios, the most important general of Justinian, in order to atone for the massacre of the rebels of Nika's position. (Then, in 532 AD, about 30,000 insurgents were slaughtered by Generals Velissario and Mundo in the hippodrome of Constantinople).

The most probable version of the name is the Latin macellio =  slaughterhouse, due to the terrible massacre suffered by the monks, but also by popular warriors by the Turks of Mohammed in 1458, after the decline of their heroic resistance. The monastery was renovated by the monk Neophytos in 1784, while the narthex was built by the pilgrims George Lapanagitis and Iliostalakti in 1805.

Very close to the monastery flows the rapid river Selinountas, which flows near Aigio. The monks Iakovos, Symeon and Panaretos fought from the monastery during the revolution of 1821.

During the civil war, (Historical event) in 1824, Andreas Zaimis took refuge in this monastery and specifically in the small church under the rock of the monastery, dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Savior. The above-mentioned chief from Kerpini remained so protected from the monastery that his grandson, later president and prime minister of Greece Alexandros Zaimis, took special care of Makellaria, as a sign of gratitude for the salvation of his grandfather. The monastery was saved and maintained, since it was not subject to the royal decree on 25/09/1833 of the regency, which dissolved many monasteries in Greece in the context of the anti-ecclesiastical and anti-monastic policy of the regents.

The main treasure of the monastery is the miraculous icon of Panagia Makellaritissa and the oil tank with the miraculous oil, which was found in the soil during the renovation of the monastery, and it is worth noting that the icon of the Virgin is hagiographed in such a way that Theotokos looks at you wherever you are in the temple. The monastery celebrates on the 15th of August (Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the 23rd of the same month on the nine days of the Virgin Mary).

Andreas Zaimis (Historical figure) was born in Kerpini, Kalavrita in 1791. Son of Asimakis Zaimis, perhaps the most important representative of his prominent family. He was initiated by Andreas Londos in the Friendly Society in 1819 and did not hesitate to leave his studies in Italy to take an active part in the preparation of the Struggle.

Together with the Germanos of Old Patras, he raised the flag of the Revolution at the Historic Monastery of Agia Lavra.

He participated with his own military corps in the repulse of Dramalis, in the siege of Patras and in the solution of the first siege of Messolonghi (December 1822). He was a member of the National Assembly and the Second National Assembly and took over by decision of the Third National Assembly the chairman of the "Administrative Committee of Greece", assuming the responsibility of governing and continuing the Struggle. During Kapodistrias he was appointed a member of the "Panhellenic".

In 1837 he finished his political career as vice-president of the Council of State and chairman of the Council of Ministers. He died in Athens in 1840. He married Eleni Deligianni, daughter of the prefect of Lagadia, Ioannis Deligianni. His son Thrasyvoulos and his grandson Alexander also served as prime ministers.
